Which openings are a DIY job, and which are not?

Why a second pair of hands isn't optional

Wedging and levelling happen at the same time: one person holds the frame and taps the wedges in, the other reads the level and calls the correction. On your own, you have to let go of one to do the other. The leaf is the second reason. Steel and glass together are heavy, and a glazed leaf carried by one person down a hallway or round a turn in the stairs will catch a door frame glass edge first.
Measuring the opening in a British home
Preparation is three checks before you order: measure the clear opening at several points and take about 5 mm per side (left, right, top) off the smallest figure, confirm the wall is load-bearing or a stud wall with solid timber behind the board, and decide between a hinged and a pivot door.
The measuring rule is a short one: take the clear width, knock 5 mm off each side for the fitting gap, and if you've measured in several places, work from the smallest. In terraces and semis that have been altered a couple of times over the decades, the left and right reveals routinely differ, and a width taken at the top alone gives you a frame that binds at the bottom. The height range covers most British rooms: a Victorian reception room can run close to 3 m, a new-build flat often sits nearer 2.4 m, and the configurator accepts leaf heights from 1,800 to 3,000 mm and widths from 600 to 1,400 mm. Side panels and a transom are entered in millimetres too and take the same allowance; they're part of the one welded frame, not bolt-ons added later. Several points, smallest figure, 5 mm a side
Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left and right reveal. The smallest figure is your number; the average is the wrong one, because a frame built to an average is too wide wherever the wall is narrower than that average. The 5 mm or so on the left, right and top is room to wedge the frame plumb, not a gap to fill.
Which walls will take a steel-and-glass door

Load-bearing walls in concrete, brick, blockwork, steel or timber are all fine. So are stud walls with solid timber behind the plasterboard. Plasterboard on its own isn't, and an uneven wall is no problem as long as it can carry the frame; the gap gets dealt with at the fixing.
Hinged or pivot: decide before you order
A hinged door hangs on side hinges. A pivot door turns on a frame-mounted hinge with an offset axis and needs no floor fixing, which is why we recommend it over underfloor heating. Hinge side, opening angle and swing clearance are all set in the configurator, so work them out against the room before you order. On glass: toughened (ESG) is 4 mm; laminated (VSG) is two 3 mm panes bonded with a 1 mm interlayer, so a laminated leaf is the heavier one to carry.

Go hinged if you want a classic side swing and a conventional stop; go pivot if the floor has to stay untouched, over underfloor heating for instance.
Checking the delivery

Before the glass comes out of its packaging, check that every part is there and undamaged. Transport damage does happen, however well it's packed: photograph it thoroughly and send the photos to the Manufaktur X team, and we'll sort it out. If it turns out your plan doesn't need a moving leaf at all, a fixed steel-and-glass room divider is the alternative: a partition with an optional walk-through gap, no hinges and no handle.
Why there's no door lining to fit
With a Manufaktur X loft door the powder-coated steel frame is itself the frame that sits in the opening: it's wedged plumb, screwed to the wall through its pre-drilled holes, and any gap on an uneven wall is packed out with a washer at the fixing. There's no separate lining to set, nothing to foam and nothing to plaster.
If you came here looking for tips on hanging a door in a lining, put that picture aside. What a conventional timber lining does, carrying the hinges and giving the leaf something square to close against, is done here by the welded steel section itself. No expanding foam, no plastering, no second frame. That's the whole point of the 5 mm allowance a side: it's the room you need to wedge the welded frame plumb before anything is fixed. Without it the frame gets forced into the opening, and a forced frame means a leaf that drags.
The steel frame is powder-coated in the RAL colour you choose, which makes it scratch-resistant, evenly coloured and hard-wearing. RAL 7016 anthracite grey and RAL 9010 pure white are two of the examples in the configurator, and any other RAL colour can be specified. Wedges and plumb: the step that decides whether the door closes
Wedges hold the frame steady in the opening; the spirit level confirms plumb on both jambs and level across the head before you drill a single hole. Our product page puts it plainly: a frame that goes in out of true can mean a door that won't close properly later. Of the doors we hear back about, one that won't close after fitting is almost always a frame pulled towards the wall on one screw, not a production fault, and that starts right here at the wedging.
Where the holes sit in the frame
Drill through the pre-drilled frame holes into the wall. The holes should sit about 8 mm from the wall side and about 10-12 mm from the door side of the section. If your wall calls for it, you can drill extra fixing holes in the frame.
Uneven walls: pack it out, don't pull it in
Wherever a gap opens up between wall and frame, pack it out with a washer at that fixing. That stops the frame going under tension and keeps the door swinging freely. Tighten the screws carefully and never so hard that the frame distorts: a distorted frame is behind most of the "door won't close" cases we hear about, and putting it right afterwards is harder than a washer beforehand.

The four fitting steps
Fitting the loft door takes four steps: prepare and position, wedge the frame plumb, screw it to the wall through the pre-drilled holes, then press in the plastic caps and test the swing.
The numbered steps below follow the manual that ships with every door. One thing before you start: if you ticked the optional door lock in the configurator, magnets in the frame hold the leaf shut against draughts, and a light pull or push opens it. For the magnet to catch, the leaf has to meet the frame evenly, which is one more reason to take your time over the alignment step. Step 1: preparation and position
Check that all the parts are there and undamaged. Decide where the door sits in the opening and make sure there's room for it to open and close: the full swing of the leaf at the angle you configured, with nothing in the arc. If you need extra fixing holes in the frame, drill them now, while it's still lying flat and easy to handle.

Step 2: aligning the frame

Stand the frame in the opening and wedge it so it stays put on its own. Now the spirit level: the frame has to be dead plumb, checked on both jambs, not just one. Get this wrong and the door won't close properly later, and no amount of tightening rescues a frame that went in out of plumb. Tap the wedges, check the level again, and keep going until both jambs agree.

Step 3: fixing to the wall
Drill through the pre-drilled frame holes into the wall. With every hole drilled, put the supplied screws in and tighten the frame up carefully without deforming it. Where there's a gap between wall and frame, pack it out with a washer at that screw so the frame isn't pulled under tension.

Step 4: finishing and adjustment
With every screw tight, press the plastic caps into the holes on the door side. Then the swing test: open and close the leaf a few times and watch whether it runs smoothly and meets the frame evenly. If it doesn't, adjust it: slacken off, re-check plumb, add a washer where the wall is pulling, tighten again.
Getting a joiner in instead: what fitting costs

Steel or timber loft door: which is easier to fit yourself?
A timber door is lighter to carry, while a steel-and-glass door is heavier but arrives as a rigid welded frame that can't be planed or forced, so the measurement has to be right.

What is the difference between a pivot door and a hinged door when fitting?
A hinged door hangs on side hinges, whereas a pivot door turns on a frame-mounted hinge with an offset axis and needs no floor fixing.
Nothing gets drilled into the floor for a pivot door, which is why it's the recommended choice over underfloor heating. For the fitting itself both types are wedged, levelled and screwed off the same way; the difference is where the leaf turns, not how the frame is fixed.
